How my French Press Travel Mug Routine Saves Me Every Day

I’ve wondered about quitting coffee a few times but never actually done it. I mean, what’s the point? Not only do I love the feeling and taste of coffee in the morning, but there’s something to the routine of the whole process that’s comfortable and safe. As someone on a long-term road trip across the USA, my life of travel has very few elements of routine in it, and making coffee in my French press travel mug is my favorite.

My French press travel mug grounds me (pun intended). I may have had a terrible night sleeping in the back of my SUV, I may have less work these days, it may be so cold outside that I get sad. But I can always get up, set up my Pocket Rocket, and make myself a cup of Joe.

And there’s something to be said about how effortless it is to make coffee like this and how little space it all takes.

Let me introduce you do the French press travel mug that saves my day every day before I even know it.

The Best French Press Travel Mug

The French press travel mug I’m talking about is the on-the-go Bobble presse.

It comes with the main mug, the press and a lid. So, it’s real nice and simple. And it works like any French press! You put ground coffee in the mug, add hot water, let it sit and brew for about 4 minutes, and then you press it!

Apart from how simple this French press travel mug is, I’ve loved that it barely lets any ground coffee into the coffee after you’ve pressed. This travel mug has no business being so high-quality for how much it costs, but it is… and I LOVE that combo!

However, speaking of high quality, the lid is terrible! It’s a flimsy silicone that gets hairs and dirt stuck to it too easily. I threw it away, but the travel mug still works for me because I usually drink my coffee in one sitting during breakfast. And it fits well in my car’s cup holder, so I’ve never spilled it on road trips.

Why I Got a French Press Travel Mug

So, why get a French press travel mug?

I’ll be honest, a French press isn’t my favorite way to drink coffee. I prefer making espresso and adding milk. But traveling in my SUV full-time has led to sacrifices being made, and one of those sacrifices has been the quality of my coffee.

Living in my SUV, my priorities for everything I buy are:

  • It has to be compact
  • It has to have as few parts are possible (simple)
  • If I need to wash it, it better be easy to wash
  • If I don’t need it, I don’t buy it (I do need coffee, but not always high-quality coffee)
  • I have to use it a lot (value)

Let’s take a look at other ways to make coffee and why I didn’t go with them.

Why not an Italian Espresso Maker (Moka Pot)?

This is my favorite way to make coffee. With the right beans, you can make a delicious espresso that, paired with milk, gives you a creamy and tasty hot drink.

But it’s not ideal for full-time travel. Road trips in general? Definitely. But not an eternal road trip.

You see, it a moka pot has three separate parts, and then you have to pour the espresso into a cup. Then, since I don’t love espresso on its own, I’d have to put milk in it. So, I’d have to have milk. But storing milk is tough when you live in your SUV.

Why not an AeroPress?

When I first started my long-term road trip, someone offered to give me an AeroPress. I tried it out, but I made my decision quickly: it had too many parts.

This means, not only is it a little complicated to use, but it’s also annoying to wash. And believe me when I tell you… the thing I hate most about traveling and living in my SUV is washing dishes.

Why not pour over coffee?

I thought of drinking pour over every morning but decided against it because of the waste it creates. I’d always be throwing away a coffee filter in addition to my coffee grounds.

Since I’m always car camping somewhere in nature, I don’t always have a trash can near me. And using non-reusable things doesn’t sit right with me, especially given my lifestyle.

The same goes for the coffee filter bags you use like tea bags. They’re very convenient, but I don’t like the amount of waste that comes from using them. Lala and I try to follow the 7 Leave No Trace principles to take care of nature!

So, I decided to get a French press travel mug! It was clear to me that it was the simplest, most convenient way to get good coffee without creating much waste.

Why THIS French Press Travel Mug?

I have to say, getting a French press travel mug was the perfect choice for road trips. They’re convenient because you can make coffee really quickly, take them on-the-go and they keep your coffee warm for hours. They usually fit in your car cup holders too. And the best part – they’re easy to wash and store.

I got the on-the-go Bobble presse because it was the most affordable high quality French press travel mug out there.

Plus, it’s designed different from usual French presses. Most presses have a pole with a filter on the end that you push through the lid to separate the liquid from the grounds. Meanwhile, the Bobble presse has an inner press that completely separates the liquid from the coffee grounds, which I think is why almost no grounds get through. It’s all metal and silicone, and it works extremely well. I’ve been really happy with it!

But I did look into other French press travel mugs before getting this one. Here are some other great options:

Bodum Travel Press

The Bodum Travel Press is the highest rated French press travel mug, and it’s also one of the most affordable ones.

Not only that – it’s also very simple. It’s just the insulating mug, lid and pressing pole with a filter on it. It holds 15 oz of coffee and fits easily in any car cup holder.

I didn’t get it because the pole and filter seemed flimsy, especially compared to the Bobble’s inner press.

ESPRO P1 French Press

The ESRO French press is also really highly rated but is a little pricier.

The price makes sense, though. The materials are of higher quality in general and it comes with more parts and, because of that, more options. It holds 11 oz of coffee, which isn’t enough (I’d say), and fits well in car cup holders.

I didn’t get it because of the price and all the different parts.

OVRLNDR Travel French Press

Somebody gave me the OVRLNDR Travel Press, which is a LOT bigger than the others!

It holds 24 oz of coffee for all you chuggers out there, and it keeps your coffee hot forever. I used it for a couple of months but eventually gave it away because it was too big and had too many parts. It was kind of annoying to wash while living in my SUV. The worst part was it didn’t fit in my car cup holder, so where would I put it?

The Final Verdict

All in all, the on-the-go Bobble press was the way to go! I’ve used it for over a year now almost every day. Now that you know the BEST French press travel mug out there…

  1. Buy the Bobble French press travel mug
  2. Get some delicious ground coffee
  3. Coffee is there for you… as it always is!

Whatever French press travel mug you decide to get, I’d really appreciate if you bought on from any of the links above! I’ll earn a tiny bit of commission from any of your purchases with NO extra cost to you.
