Can you truly get to know San Diego in 3 days… or even less? Of course! All you need is a rental car, a beach towel (or chair) and a San Diego itinerary to take advantage of your time!
I was able to get a wonderful tour of San Diego from a local friend, exploring beaches, eating delicious food and walking a whole lot.
For my quick visit, I got to see the best beaches for sunset (every day), visit Balboa park and enjoy downtown San Diego and the Marina.

San Diego blew my mind with its openness, outdoorsiness, lush landscape (at least in March), and the city’s soul.
Ahh, nothing like watching people surf during the sunset!
Having experienced San Diego with a local’s guidance, I want to share how you can make the most of your short trip there.

This San Diego itinerary is obviously flexible. Feel free to pick and choose what sounds best to you from any of the days.
But if you have 1 day, I recommend doing day 1. If you have 2 days, do 1 and 2. And if you have 3 days, you guessed it… do all three days.
You could also probably fit more into each day if you’re a “GO, GO, GO” kind of traveler. I prefer slow travel, so I didn’t do as much as I probably could have each day. Instead, I opted to enjoy where I was and get to know each destination more deeply.
But everyone has their own travel style…
The point is, here are some options for a 1, 2, or 3-day San Diego itinerary!
1, 2, or 3-Day San Diego Itinerary
Before getting to the itinerary details, let’s take a quick look at what you need to do before you go.

- Rental car: a rental car is a must unless you have someone driving you around (like I did). Find the best prices by using Discover Cars.
- Buy museum tickets in advance: first, choose 1 of the 18 museums in Balboa Park. Then, get your ticket.
- Reserve a surf class in advance
- Stay at a convenient location, preferably close to the beach
Day 1: San Diego’s Best Beaches and Hispanic Food
No San Diego itinerary is complete without a copious number of visits to the beach.
I stayed with my local friend right across from Sea World San Diego, and it’s a great area only 15 minutes from the beach. To make the most of your stay, look for accommodations there, since it’s close enough to everything on this San Diego itinerary.

From your home base, drive north to immerse yourself in what every San Diegan lives for – the beach. My friend told me she tries to get to a beach every day for the sunset.
If you’re spending a day in San Diego, make sure you get to a beach (or multiple).
Now, Torrey Pines State Natural Preserve is quintessential San Diego.
I loved the rolling hills along the coast that become cliffs right at the water’s edge above a rocky beach. The landscape here is amazing – ever-changing and lush. And then there’s the people, all outdoors to enjoy the crisp morning air.
A big reason why I loved San Diego is that I had just driven through the southwest. I was DONE with the desert, and Torrey Pines was a breath of fresh air… well, salty air.

You can park on N Torrey Pines Road for free if you can find a spot. Otherwise, pay $20 to park in the Torrey Pines Beach Parking or the North Beach Lot if THAT’S full.
The earlier you go, the more spots you’ll find!
Next, grab a delicious lunch… extra points if it’s something Hispanic. The restaurant I went to is a small, unknown Colombian restaurant called “Sabores Colombianos.” They made a Bandeja Paisa that tasted like home.
If you’re not feeling Colombian food, here are some other lunch options:
- Go to Tacos el Gordo for some authentic Mexican street tacos.
- To try a variety of foods, go on a food tour in Old Town Sand Diego.

After replenishing calories, you could head over to Sunset Cliffs.
If you have enough time, wander around Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. It’s not as lush as Torrey Pines, but it’s somehow more rugged. The cliffs are also shorter, but that makes them more featured, with small half-moon bays and arches all over.
There aren’t really many beaches, which makes it so the waves are constantly crashing against the cliffs and sending water 20 feet into the air.
That makes it the perfect place to watch a gorgeous sunset over the water.
Be warned, there will be crowds.

Finally, to end the day on a high note, consider a trip to San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter for a delicious meal and, if you’re itching to do something, a party.
Nightlife in San Diego is vibrant. While I was there, Lala and our friend went out for a Bad Bunny event (I stayed in because I’m boring). It unfortunately wasn’t very good. But my point is… if you’re looking to do something at night, San Diego has got you covered.
The Gaslamp Quarter is San Diego’s top entertainment area, with bars, clubs, restaurants and even art galleries right in downtown.
Day 2: Downtown, the Marina & Balboa Park
If you want to get to know more of San Diego, spend your day in downtown, the marina and Balboa Park. It’s one of the biggest parks I’ve ever been to and definitely the one with the most things to do.

Finding parking downtown is well worth the trouble to start the day right – with coffee and the most unique breakfast I’ve had.
Have a bite at ASA Bakery, a Japanese bakery that will blow your mind. It was so amazing, I chewed slowly, closing my eyes to enjoy the explosion of flavors in my mouth.
You can try the Arabiki sausage roll (the best thing they have) and curry pan, but they also have a bunch of different sweet and savory pastries. Each one is truly unique.

Next, walk down Market Street all the way to the Marina.
You’ll walk past the Manchester Grand Hyatt to a beautiful boardwalk by the San Diego bay. Explore Seaport Village and Ruocco Park, take an iconic picture at Tuna Harbor and visit the USS Midway Museum.
According to the internet, the USS Midway Museum is the BEST thing to do on any San Diego itinerary. I thought that was hilarious when I saw that because there’s so much to do in San Diego.
Visiting a military museum in an aircraft carrier does sound amazing, but the fact that it’s the highest rated tour in San Diego is surprising. It must be awesome, or a lot of veterans must visit for its rich military history… or both!

Then, have lunch in an amazing restaurant downtown because Balboa Park is right next door.
Alternatively, bring your own lunch and have a picnic under the shade of a giant tree at Balboa Park.
Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre park with LOTS of green space, many curated gardens and 18 different museums.
It’s also right next to downtown San Diego.
For a free visit to the park, leave your car parked at one of the free parking spots on Balboa Drive. From there, you can walk to the park center and enjoy the Botanical Building. Then, stroll around as you watch magicians and performers.
For a more immersive experience, explore historical museums or art galleries. Definitely check out the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum.
If you want to go all out, visit the San Diego Zoo, which is one of the world’s best, most famous zoos.

After a long day of walking and exploring, I just called it a day.
But if you’re looking to finish the day with a bang:
- Go salsa dancing at Cafe Sevilla or Tango del Rey (my local friend’s favorites)
- Take a sunset sailing tour on the San Diego bay
- Go to yet another beach to watch the sunset
Day 3: Beach-hopping to See Seals and Surfers
Now, day 3 of this San Diego itinerary is your opportunity to customize more of your trip to San Diego based on what you like.
It’s a day to catch up on what you missed or do something completely new.

Option #1: Sea World, LEGO Land or even Tijuana
Sea World and LEGO Land are two of the top attractions in San Diego.
I wouldn’t spend my time there if I only had a few days in San Diego. But they are some of the top-rated attractions in the city. If you love theme parks or are traveling with your family, both are great options.
Alternatively, you can spend your last day in San Diego by leaving the city.
San Diego is on the border with Mexico, and the city of Tijuana is right next door.
For maximum convenience, go on a day trip to Tijuana with a guide. That way, everything is taken care of for you and you can relax and enjoy the tour.
If you’re feeling adventurous, drive across the border yourself and experience a piece of Mexico.
Option #2: Beaches and Surf
On the third day of my 3-day San Diego itinerary, I just visited more beaches and watched people surf.
My favorite memory? Eating a Cava bowl on the beach while people surfed in the sunset. My taste buds were happy, my bare feet felt great in the sand, and the view was incredible.
As you might have noticed by now, San Diego’s beaches are gorgeous and legendary, and the best are:
- La Jolla
- Tourmaline, Law Street & Pacific Beach
- Coronado and Silver Strand

If you’re looking to check surfing off of your bucket list, San Diego is the place to learn!
San Diego has a lot of beaches with waves that are perfect for learning to surf, just like it has beaches for more experienced surfers.
Some of the best places to learn how to surf are La Jolla and Moonlight State Beach. But you can also take lessons on the long beach from Tourmaline Surf Park down to Mission Beach.
For food throughout the day, check out any of the hundreds of beach-side restaurants at the beach (or beaches) you choose to visit. To get to know typical San Diegan food, try:
- Fish Tacos
- Ceviche, served Baja-style
- Surf and Turf (a combination of seafood and steak)
- Mexican fusion
- Any highly rated seafood joint

However you spend your 1, 2 or 3 days in San Diego, I hope my San Diego itinerary has helped you plan your own trip!
From beaches and surfing to amazing restaurants and museums, this 3-day San Diego itinerary is perfect for getting to know the city’s soul.
I’ve visited a lot of cool cities in the US, like the day I spent in San Francisco and the weeks I explored Las Vegas, and San Diego is by far one of the best.
It’s a locally inspired itinerary, and what I would recommend to anyone visiting San Diego for the first time. Have an incredible trip to “America’s Finest City!”
Pin this itinerary for later!
